CIMANDE

Cimande is a West Javanese system believed to have been created by Embah Kahir in the 1700's. Cimande is one of the most widely spread styles of Pencak Silat and is considered to be one of the oldest, and one of the styles created by the ethnic Sundanese. While Embah Kahir is credited with creating Cimande in most circles, it is also said that Cimande had been around for quite a while and that he is the teacher who made it more widespread. While many disagree as to the details of Cimande's origins, it's lineage from Embah Kahir on is very well documented.

Cimande training begins with the practice of Jurus Duduk or seated Jurus training with a partner. Once the practitioner develops forearm strength from seated Jurus training they are combined with footwork. The training also includes sword jurus as well as Tepak Salancar.  Apart from Pencak Silat, Cimande also has a history of healing and internal energy development. A code of conduct is adhered to by practitioners and there are many traditional ceremonies that a student will be involved in as training progresses. One involves signing an oath stating that they will adhere to the ethical code of conduct. Another involves using the Cimande Balur oil, long used to heal broken bones and bruises, to make a students forearms stronger through a mixture of conditioning though striking and specialized massage techniques. This is believed to make the students arms impervious to pain.

Cimande practitioners all go through a unique ceremony that involves them receiving eye drops infused with certain Indonesian plants. The student is then required to recite certain mantras at which point they are then considered a student. This initiation was recieved by Guru Besar Jerry, Guru Darren, Guru Derek and various other students and teachers, some in more than one lineage of Cimande.

Our Cimande comes from multiple sources that all stem from the main Embah Kahir Lineage.

1. Tarik Kolot Cimande: Our Cimande stream from William Sanders comes through his teacher Pendekar Mama Sukarma, son of Bapak Bagasol. Pendekar Sukarma had a school and taught Cimande in the Tarik Kolot area. His family traces their lineage directly to Embah Kahir. From this stream we draw some of our Cimande concepts as taught by William Sanders with the additions he made to the material. His system of Pukulan Cimande Pusaka uses the 21 Cimande Tarik Kolot Jurus. These Jurus are similar in some ways to the jurus we train today. Sanders taught these Jurus as they were taught to him and also expanded upon the information by adding his own input based on his training with Malterer in the 5 animal styles before passing them to Guru Besar Jerry. The Cimande from Pendekar Mama, laid the foundation that would be expanded upon later by Guru Besar by training with Kang Cecep Rahman.

2. Silat Panglipur: The influence that weighs the most heavily on how we express Cimande in PCK Silat comes from Cecep A. Rahman and his organization Pencak Silat Panglipur. This stream of Cimande is where we get our 33 Cimande Jurus, our Jurus Pepedangan and the foundation in Cimande concepts that PCK Silat uses. The 33 Cimande Jurus make up the foundation of our system along with our 18 PCK Sera Jurus. These Jurus are not simply hand movements. They were taught by Kang Cecep with a delivery system that makes them some of the most effective Jurus we had ever seen. Kang Cecep had some of the details that make Cimande in Silat Panglipur devastating. With the center line control, power development and delivery and application that Kang Cecep very generously gave PCK we have been able to take our Cimande to a whole new level. We are continuing to learn more from Kang Cecep, who is as humble as he is deadly. He is very knowledgeable about all West Javanese Silat and has been a great help in learning where some of the other pieces of our art originally came from. This gave us the opportunity to learn more about our past and see some of the influences other West Javanese styles such as Cikalong and Sabandar have had on some of the teachers in our lineage. It was the interactions with some of these other influences and styles throughout our past that built the framework for where PCK is today.

3. Pasundan Pencak SilatGuru Ismail Sujadi has been sharing some of his knowledge of Cimande with us. Through Guru Ismail's lineage we have gained knowledge of Cimande Jurus, Langkah, as well as Cimande Healing and Massage. Guru Ismail has a wealth of knowledge and is a very skilled teacher and great friend to PCK. He was generous enough to initiate Guru Besar Jerry, Guru Derek, Guru Brian and a few other select students into his family system. He has shared some Cimande and Cimande Macan Guling with us at various times and has impressed everyone with his skill, humbleness and kind spirit.
